Scientific Collaborations Sought
In
the interests of expanding the variety of elasmobranchs studied and exchange
of research techniques, the ReefQuest Centre for Shark Research welcomes
scientific collaborations with other researchers or institutions conducting
work on sharks or batoids. We are particularly interested in opportunities
to study deep-sea sharks and collaborating with the fisheries research
departments of developing nations.
We offer shared use of our research equipment, including:
- surface and deep-sea longlines
- scuba gear
- photographic and videographic equipment
- measurement, dissection, and preservation equipment
- field and laboratory microscopes
- microscope imaging equipment (up to 200X)
- computer hardware
- statistical and modeling software
- comparative study material (specimens)
- marine science library (books and papers)
|
We offer a wide range of laboratory and field skills, including
- elasmobranch identification
- morphometric and meristic data collection and analysis
- development of sampling protocols
- specimen preservation, preparation, and curation
- dissection and tissue sampling
- age determination
- genetic sampling and analysis
- identification of stomach contents
- determination of maturity state
- determination of population size and structure
- scuba and free diving
- underwater photography and videography
- experimental design
- behavior scoring and analysis
|
We also offer scientific expertise in the following fields
- phylogenetics
- taxonomy
- comparative hard and soft tissue anatomy
- functional morphology
- physiology
- sensory biology
- life history
- reproductive biology
- behavioral ecology
- zoogeography
- population biology
- conservation
- aquarium husbandry
We are also interested in collaborating with universities, museums,
aquaria, and conservation organizations on development of public education
programs and materials; we offer:
- research assistance
- popular science writing
- scientific illustration
- photographs
- video clips
- fossil and extant specimens
- research equipment for display
- museum display design
- website lay-out and development
If any of the above would be of use to your research or organization and
formal collaboration is an option, please contact us at:
